Trauma
Trauma can affect how you experience your thoughts, emotions, relationships, and sense of safety long after a difficult event has passed. Sometimes the effects are easy to recognize, such as intrusive memories, anxiety, nightmares, or feeling constantly on alert. Other times, trauma may show up through emotional numbness, difficulty trusting others, changes in relationships, or a persistent feeling that something is wrong.
At Sage Mental Health, we understand that every person’s experience with trauma is different. Our counselling approach creates space to explore what you have experienced at a pace that feels manageable for you. The goal is not to erase your memories or force you to move forward before you are ready. Therapy may help you understand your responses, process difficult experiences, and develop ways to feel more grounded in everyday life.
Understanding How Trauma Can Affect You
Trauma does not always come from one specific event. It may follow an accident, abuse, violence, medical experience, sudden loss, relationship difficulty, or another overwhelming situation. Repeated or prolonged stressful experiences may also have lasting emotional effects.
You may notice changes in your sleep, concentration, mood, relationships, or ability to relax. Some people experience flashbacks or strong reactions to reminders of what happened. Others may avoid certain situations, conversations, places, or people because they bring up difficult feelings.
These responses can be exhausting, particularly when they continue long after the original experience. Recognizing them can be an important part of deciding whether additional support may be helpful.

A Trauma-Informed Approach to Therapy
Trauma therapy at Sage Mental Health is collaborative and personalized. Your therapist can work with you to understand your concerns, identify your goals, and determine which therapeutic approaches may fit your needs.
Depending on your circumstances, therapy may include approaches such as cognitive behavioural strategies, mindfulness, somatic techniques, or other evidence-informed methods. The focus is on creating a therapeutic environment where you can explore difficult experiences without judgment.
For some clients, Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) may be considered. EMDR uses bilateral stimulation, such as guided eye movements or tapping, while you focus on aspects of a distressing memory. It may help reduce the emotional intensity associated with traumatic experiences.
EMDR Therapy in Vancouver
If you are exploring EMDR therapy in Vancouver, an initial discussion can help you understand how this approach works and whether it may be appropriate for your circumstances. EMDR does not require you to forget what happened. The memories remain part of your history, while therapy may help change how strongly they affect you in the present.
During EMDR, you remain in control of the process and can pause or stop when needed. Some people may experience emotions, physical sensations, memories, or dreams between sessions as the brain continues processing the material. These possibilities can be discussed with your therapist before treatment begins.
You Do Not Have to Navigate Trauma Alone
Seeking support does not mean that your experience was insignificant or that you should have handled it differently. Therapy can provide a confidential space to understand what you are experiencing and explore practical ways forward.
At Sage Mental Health, our therapists work collaboratively with clients across Vancouver and surrounding communities, with options that include in-person and remote counselling depending on the therapist and service.
