Identity Issues
At Sage Mental Health & Maternal Wellness, we understand that questions of identity can feel complex, confusing, and deeply personal. Whether you are exploring who you are, what you believe, or how you fit into the world around you, our therapeutic space offers warmth, curiosity, and support. Identity issues can surface at any point in life—through adolescence, adulthood, pregnancy, parenthood, cultural transitions, or after trauma—and may affect your sense of belonging, purpose, and self-worth.
You do not have to navigate these questions alone. We work with individuals to explore and understand their identity with care and respect, fostering growth and self-acceptance along the way.
What Are Identity Issues?
Identity refers to the way we understand ourselves—our values, beliefs, gender, culture, roles, and relationships. Struggles with identity often arise when different parts of ourselves feel in conflict, or when life changes challenge the story we’ve told ourselves about who we are.
Some common experiences related to identity issues include:
- Feeling disconnected from yourself or others
- Uncertainty about life direction or purpose
- Struggling with cultural, racial, or gender identity
- Conflict between personal values and societal expectations
- Emotional distress during major transitions (e.g., becoming a parent, career change, immigration)
At Sage, we approach identity work with compassion and cultural sensitivity, recognizing that each person’s story is unique and valid.

Identity and Life Transitions
Working with a therapist can offer a supportive environment to explore identity-related thoughts and emotions safely. At Sage, we use a collaborative, strengths-based approach tailored to your goals and lived experience. Our team incorporates modalities such as:
- Narrative Therapy
- Mindfulness-Based Therapy
- Emotion-Focused Therapy
- Cultural and Trauma-Informed Approaches
- LGBTQIA+ Affirming Practices
It’s acceptable that you might not know all the answers. Asking the right questions is as important in therapy as gaining insight. You could start to feel more in tune, in control, and rooted in your identity as a result of our collaboration.
Support Across Identities and Communities
We accept customers with a wide range of identities, experiences, and backgrounds. Our therapists are available to listen without passing judgment, whether you are navigating ancestral trauma, examining your sexual orientation, gender expression, or ethnic or cultural identification. We encourage you to connect with your principles, community, and true voice while embracing complexity.
